The Halloween Book Tag

2:55 PM

It's nearing the end of October which means Halloween is almost here! Halloween is one of my favorite holidays because you're encouraged to dress up and pretend to be someone else. If it were socially acceptable to dress up in a different costume each day, I totally would.

To celebrate Halloween, I'd thought I'd share this treat with you: The Halloween Book Tag. I read Tasha's Halloween Book Tag on her blog The Bookie Monsters, and she invited anyone to participate in the tag.

Also, be warned, I went a little gif crazy on this post.

Favorite Horror Book?

Title: The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray
Author: Chris Wooding
Genre: Gothic-Horror Thriller
Summary: A seventeen year-old wych hunter, Thaniel, discovers a beautiful young woman possessed by a demon and soon finds she's connected to a series of gruesome supernatural murders throughout the Old Quarter of London.
Why I love it:
1) The setting is an alternate Victorian England
2) Jack the Ripper is in it.
3) It has a similar feel to the TV show Supernatural.

Scariest Moment in a Book You've Read?

It's been a while since I've read The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray, but I remember being scared when various wych-kin (demons) were being drawn to Alaizabel.

Would you or have you ever dressed up like a book character for Halloween?

Yes and yes.

When I was in elementary school, I dressed up as Hermione Granger for Halloween. My mom helped me with the costume, and I even carried spell books (muggle books wrapped in brown paper bags with labels like Potions, Charms, Transfiguration, etc) all day.

I also dressed up like Belle from Beauty and the Beast in college on Halloween and walked all around campus with my nose stuck in a book.

I have no doubt that there are more bookish Halloween costumes in my future.

What do you think your favorite character would dress up as for Halloween?

My favorite character is Hermione, and I think she'd dress up as Artemisia Lufkin, the first female minister of magic. Lufkin created the Department of International Cooperation.  I'd also like to think Hermione might dress up as a Hogwarts headmistress and go around scaring students by telling them they've been expelled, which was Hermione's worst fear come to life when she faced a dementor.

Okay, she probably wouldn't tell them they're expelled because it's too mean; if someone were to do it to her she'd probably have a heart attack, and Hermione is empathetic so she wouldn't inflict that kind of anxiety on someone else.

Ron would definitely do it:)

What is your favorite kind of horror (gore, psychological thriller, spooky)?

I prefer psychological thrillers. Also, in general, I'm okay with reading horror but am a complete chicken when it comes to horror movies. I avoid scary movies like the plague. The only scary Halloween movie I enjoy watching is Arsenic and Old Lace.  Cary Grant is one of my favorite actors. His reaction to encountering a dead body is perfect.

If books were as cheap as candy, which ones would you give out to trick-o-treaters?

Based upon some of my earlier answers above, you can probably guess which books I'd give trick-o-treaters. The Harry Potter books.

Halloween to-read list?

I don't have a specific reading list for Halloween. That being said, now that I've done this book tag I'm itching to read The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray again! Also, NaNoWriMo is right around the corner, so I'm going to be more focused on writing than reading this next month. Below is my reaction to anyone who asks me if I'm nervous about writing a 50,000+ word novel in one month.

Recommend some Halloween reads?

  • The Haunting of Alaizabel Cray by Chris Wooding, obviously.
  • And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. A group of people are trapped in a house together and are being killed off one by one.
  • Edgar Allen Poe Short Stories: "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Cask of Amontillado" are two of my favorites. They're both pretty short reads, so you definitely should have time to sneak them in before or on Halloween.
  • Sherlock Holmes and the Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. This is my favorite Sherlock Holmes story. It is creepy and has one of the most awesome endings.
  • Prom Nights from Hell by Kim Harrison, Stephanie Meyer, Meg Cabot, Lauren Myracle, and Michelle Jaffe. This is a collection of short stories written by popular young adult authors. I read it back when I was in high school. I remember them being fun and quick reads.
  • Macbeth by William Shakespeare. Witches, murder, revenge, what's not to love? This is my favorite of Shakespeare's tragedies.
  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Life and death, what it means to be human, the dangers of megalomania, the supernatural, each time I read this book I pull something new out of it. It is definitely near the top of the list of my favorite classics.

Tag, you're it!
I nominate AdelynB K Rivers, S J Bouquet, Christina Im, Alyssa, Rachana, Cait, AenteeSamantha Chaffin and anyone else who feels inclined to participate in The Halloween Book Tag.

If you don't have time to do the full book tag before Halloween, feel free to comment below with your favorite horror book.

I'll leave you with one of my favorite Halloween songs.

  3. This is awesome! Thanks so much for tagging me! I love the amount of Harry Potter that invaded this post! After reading those books, I wanted all my holidays to be like the holidays in the wizard world. And I love that a bunch of your scary stories are the classics! I don't do too much horror unless it's gothic! I can't wait to put up my post!

  5. Eeep thanks for the tag! I literally have NEVER DONE HALLOWEEN EVER. 0_0 Like Australia is trying to make it a thing??? But it's not really working?? (Which makes sense because it's about harvest and all that, and we are like having spring and new flowers and storm season all that.) Buuut anyway. I do love a creepy book. :D I've read Frankenstein and a few Harry Potters but nothing else you mentioned. D: I'm woooefully bad at finding creepy books that actually terrify me. :P

  6. Thanks for tagging me! I don't think I'll be doing this one since I won't be able to get this post up before Halloween, but this is still such a fabulous tag. Your cosplay looks fantastic, and your book recommendations are ON POINT.
