Snazzy Snippets #2

10:34 AM

What: It’s an opportunity for writers! Every two months, Alyssa at The Devil Orders Takeout and Emily at The Loony Literate post a prompt or question for you to share a snippet of less than 500 words. It’s designed to let you have fun, analyse your work on a smaller level, or just write something to join in.

This month's themes:
A snippet from page 16
or
A snippet of 16 words or fewer
or
A snippet about something NEW
e.g. a new year, new school, introducing a new person/character/setting, a new revelation

A snippet from page 16

Whenever Cyndra created a curse, she always liked to add a little something extra to it. In recent years, the number of witches and wizards touting themselves as professional curse breakers had risen to annoying heights. Their increased presence put a damper on her business. Fewer and fewer people bought curses because there seemed to be little point in cursing someone or something when it could be broken by any amateur witch or wizard who claimed the title of curse breaker. Cyndra liked to think no ordinary witch or wizard would be able to break the curses she created, but she wasn’t arrogant enough to believe her magic infallible. Therefore, she built a magical trap into all of her curses. If anyone ever did manage to break one of her curses, they were in for a nasty surprise.

A snippet of 16 or fewer words

“Unbelievable. He’s offering her food. She tries to kill me, and now he’s feeding her breakfast.”

A snippet about something new

“Thank you for your assistance, young woman.”
He leaned forward to bow to her, but Cyndra quickly stopped him by grabbing him by the arm. She didn’t want to keep having to pick the man up off the ground every time he felt the need to bow.
“You’re welcome,” Cyndra said. “Maybe you’d like to put down your pallet and get some rest.”
“Oh, I’m not tired,” Royston replied with a grin. “Why, I feel as though I could stay awake all night. Wine makes a man feel young, you know, like he can do anything!” He shouted the last sentence and Cyndra winced. By the looks of it, she wasn’t going to get any more sleep tonight. “So, what’s your name, dearie?”
“Cyndra Wasser.”
“Royston Olivier, at your service.” He started to bow again but Cyndra stopped him. “So, Cyndra, what did you do to land yourself in here?”
Cyndra let out an exasperated sigh at having to repeat herself for what felt like the fiftieth time. “I didn’t do anything. I’ve been wrongfully accused of murder. Why are you in jail?”
Royston giggled and then hiccupped. He seemed to think the hiccup was funny because he broke out in another fit of giggles. Every time he tried to stop laughing, he’d last only a fraction of a second before another giggle slipped out of his mouth which set him laughing again. Cyndra was just beginning to think he’d never answer her question when he finally calmed down enough to say, “Oh, I’m usually thrown in a cell at least once a week. You may not have noticed, but I am a bit overly fond of wine.”
“Really?” Cyndra drawled, unable to hide the sarcasm in her voice.
He grinned. “Yes, well, when I drink more than I ought to, I have a tendency to relieve myself wherever I feel the need, whether it is in the proper location or not.”
“So, you’re saying you’re in here for public urination?”
“Yes, I am.”
