Angels of the Apocalypse

Summary of Angelfall

Six weeks ago, angels of the apocalypse descended on Earth. Cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco lie in smoldering ruins. Seventeen year old Penryn is doing everything she can to help her wheelchair bound sister and her insane mother survive in a world where street gangs rule the day, and people cower in the shadow of angel wings. When her sister is snatched away, Penryn will do anything to save her. Even if that means teaming up with an injured enemy angel named Raffe.

Review

Post-apocalyptic and/or dystopian books, movies, and TV shows have become very popular in the last few years. With the success of The Hunger Games series, The Divergent series, and The Walking Dead, more and more authors have been drawn to pen their own version of what life on Earth would be like after a major catastrophic event. After a while, I got a little tired of reading these books and decided to take a break from them. My sister recommended Angelfall to me months ago, and I finally picked it up and read it. I am so glad I did. Angelfall had a realistic setting, an endearing main character, and a plot that kept me turning the pages as fast as I could.

From the very beginning of the book, I was immediately struck with how realistic the post-apocalyptic setting is in Angelfall. In many post-apocalyptic books, the world is vastly different from how it is today. Angelfall, in contrast, takes place only six weeks after the angels land on Earth. I also liked Susan Ee's realistic portrayal of what it would be like to be in a wheelchair in a post-apocalyptic world. All the other post-apocalyptic books I've read and movies and TV shows I've watched have all featured people running. In Angelfall, Penryn has to push her sister's non-electric wheelchair when they run from building to building. Because there is no electricity, none of the elevators work, so they always have to stay on the first floor.

Penryn's loyalty and devotion to her sister, mother, and later to Raffe make her a likable and endearing main character. Once she's decided to help someone, she'll stay true to her word, even if it means putting herself in danger. Her stubbornness often gets her into trouble, but she won't let that stop her from helping those she cares about.

Because I cared about what happened to Penryn, I couldn't seem to turn the pages fast enough. The plot is fast paced, and author Susan Ee does an excellent job of giving the reader hope only to smash that hope to smithereens. As I got closer and closer to the end of the book, I didn't want it to end. I didn't want to leave behind the characters of Penryn and Raffe. I't's a good thing there are more books in the series.

  3. Ahhh I loved it so much TOO! And omg I think it's one of my favourite paranormal/apocalypse books of ever. It felt so real and relatable?!? and just unique too?! WHICH IS GREAT because I read so much that things start to sound the same after a while. XD But this = perfection. I still haven't read the 3rd book yet though, omg, I need to get onto that.
Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!
